The UH-1 "Huey" helicopter was the essence of the 1st Cavalry Division. Helicopters provided mobility, firepower and supplies. They came in two varieties: the passenger-carrying UH-1D "Slick," and the UH-1B "Hog" gunship.
The UH-1B "Hog" provided the hard-pressed infantry with fire support, flying to the hottest danger zones during the course of the battle. Armed XM157 rocket pods and M134 machine guns, the Hogs were able to keep the enemy at bay during the course of the fighting in the Ia Drang Valley.
