SATURDAY MAY 30TH 2009 ST. ALBERT, ALBERTA
at Mission: Fun & Games
86 McKenney Avenue
St. Albert, AB
T8N 2T7
As of 7:30am, May 30, there is still room for 5 more players, get your registrations in before 8:30am
If you have any questions not answered here, please email us, please do not call the store. I will reply to your email and likely post the answer at the bottom under updates.
Welcome to the 2009 champs. We have moved the date away from the long weekend. This was a much debated request last year; we will see how it goes. I know it will be tougher on the out of towners, I regret this, and if attendance is lower, we may well go back to the long weekend in 2010.
This event is limited to 64 players. While the store can handle that much if we remove and move around some fixtures, the first plan is to use the empty space 2 doors down. 2 bays will be vacant and at our disposal from March 31 on. Yes, we are looking for volunteers to come set up tables the day before. Please email us if you are able to help out.
There will be four rounds, same as last year, with each player taking each of the four player positions over the 4 rounds. The plan this year is to:
- Have everyone show up between 8:a.m. and 8:30 to check in.
- play round one at about a 9:00 am
- play round two at about 11:00 , finish at 1:00
Then we break for lunch.
Players have to be back by the start of round 3.
- play round 3 start about at 2pm
- play round 4 , two hours later.
This is TENTATIVE and may change.
The top 16 players are then expected back after supper break to finish the qualifier THAT evening.
The top four return the next morning well rested at 11 am.
Each player is assigned a player number, and the seating is randomly generated by the software provided by Mayfair. It is inevitable that some folks who are brothers, sisters, spouses etc will be at the same table. There is no way around this. Collusion is not tolerated, and Mayfair has given the head judge full authority to turf anyone even remotely suspected of collusion. At the past year's event, there were no issues. It is a wonderful to see players coming out and playing in the spirit of the game. I hope that with each passing year, we build up a community of players who look forward to coming out, seeing many of the same players from years past and meeting new players who left them with positive playing experiences
The head judge will be myself, John Engel.
The starting game will be randomly generated by me using the official rules. This will be recorded and made available to the players at the start of each round.
We will be using the 2006 editions of the game at all tables. It is a good idea to bring along your own copy of the game, no matter what edition, in case we need back up.
It is not known (as of March 26th) what the other venues will be in Canada, nor when. If and when we are notified, we will post that here.
Unlike last year, we are expecting a handful of prizes from Mayfair. Most of these will be given away randomly at the start of round 4. The first place prize remains a paid flight to the 2009 championships in the U.S. in August, as well as the cost of the hotel at this venue during that tournament. I hope to have more specific details soon. There are no prizes for certain for 2nd- 4th, but again that may change.
There is no 'world' champs this year. Mayfair has advised the world's champs will be held every second year. It is unclear at the time of this posting if the winner(s) from Canada for 2009 will have invites to the 2010 event.
The cost is $36 + g.s.t. if you pre-register on line in advance up to one week before the event.
(if you pay with Paypal, a processing fee will also apply) .
The number of spots available is 64.
You can see the remaining spots by looking near the top next to 'quantity in stock'.
In the last week of the registration, the entry fee is $40.00 +
In the event you need to cancel:
We will refund the full amount if you cancel before the last week of registration while it is at still at $36
If you cancel cancel after that, but before NOON the day before the event (M.S.T we will refund all but $7.50 (+ gst)
If you cancel after noon the day before the event, there is no refund whatsoever.
If the event fills up to the allotted space with on line registrants, we will create a waiting list on line additional players. Every year we have a few who are late and lose their spot.
If the registration time does not change, that means if you are not here at 8:30 a.m at the latest, and we have back up players on the waiting list, you WILL lose your spot and your deposit.
All of the above has been posted on March 26th. Any new information will be posted below. I hope you can make it out here to play!

APRIL 28th UPDATE:
All registered players as of today have been sent an email asking if they would still be able to attend if we make this a single day event. This would mean no breaks between rounds, and cutting off registration right at 8:45. If these changes are implemented it will be noted below in a future update. We hope all the players asked will reply by May 5th.
May 13th Update:
There were a couple of players who could not play the event in a single day, so I have elected to leave the event as is. However, with only 13 players pre-registered, our attendance is not looking promising.
May 14th: There are 16 new sets of the game on the way via Mayfair. We also have been told to get the shirt sizes needed for the final four players to Mayfair at the conclusion of the event a.s.a.p. These will get to us some time in July
May 20 We have been sent our Settlers of Catan games. The bad news is they are 2 years late, the good news is they are the newest versions. All game will be played on the relaunch editions.
May 21 The Mayfair and Settlers pins have arrived, it look like there will be enough for everyone; if not, they will be given out in order of registration. We are at 21 players as of today.
May 26th
The on line registration is now at $40. We have approximately 30 people pre registered. A reminder we need everyone show up between 8:a.m. and 8:30 to check in.
May 27th
John will be on City TV breakfast TV promoting the event Thursday May 28that about 8:30 - 8:40 a.m. You can see the TV spot here.
May 29th
An email has been sent to line registrants with the latest updates. This is too long to post here. An extra copy will be available at check in for review
Ed Z was the winner! Todd Dean, Charles from Winnipeg, and Karr Hong were the other finalists. More news soon!
